☕ The Quick Sip

Promote What You Value  View minimalism not as deprivation, but as the intentional promotion of the things you value most by removing the distractions that crowd them out.

Stop Paying the Clutter Tax  Recognize the hidden costs of managing excess stuff. By clearing the clutter, you promote a sense of peace and reduce the mental stress of a crowded environment.

Set New Boundaries  Practice emotional minimalism by saying no to social obligations that don't bring you joy to make room for deeper meaning.

What is the hardest thing for you to declutter?

  • Sentimental gifts (even if I don't like them)

  • "Just in case" items (like extra cables)

  • Expensive things I spent good money on

  • Clothes that might fit "someday"

Topic Overview

At its core, minimalism is not a set of rigid rules or an aesthetic of deprivation; it is a tool to rid yourself of life’s excess in favor of focusing on what is truly important. Think of it like clearing the cluttered furniture off an old, idyllic front porch so there is finally enough room for people to sit down, stretch out, and enjoy the evening air together. It is the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of everything that distracts us from them.

Why Minimalism Matters

Minimalism matters because we live in an age of stuff.  Do you notice how often you are bombarded by advertisements or marketing of some sort? Even though we may feel immune to the constant stream of advertising (sometimes charading as other types of content - think the world of influencers), it’s designed to make us feel incomplete or as if we’re missing out without a purchase. This constant pursuit of more often leads to a "clutter tax”. The term “clutter tax” refers to the hidden costs (both financial and emotional!) of owning, storing, maintaining, and managing items you do not need or use. This topic is a great conversation starter because it invites us to peel back the layers of our modern lifestyle.

Research suggests that physical environments filled with too many objects can tax our brains, raising cortisol levels and making it difficult to focus or relax (Saxbe & Repetti, 2010). But it doesn't have to be just about our physical space. We can apply minimalism to a variety of areas in our lives. For example, incorporating digital minimalism into your life might come in the form of reclaiming hours lost to mindless scrolling. Improving your emotional minimalism might mean learning to set healthy boundaries or practicing saying no to social obligations that don't bring you joy. By simplifying and promoting what we most value across different areas of our lives, we make room for more connection and meaning.
