How to use a Front Porch Retreats Conversation Guide to Spark Connection
Navigating the Conversation Guide
Our Conversation Guides are a roadmap for exploration. They aren't scripts, simply ideas to help you navigate a topic in an insightful way. Whether you are talking to a spouse, a neighbor, or reflecting by yourself, our Conversation Guides are intended to help you initiate and experience more and deeper conversations in your own life.
Each Front Porch Retreats Conversation Guide features six sections. We’ve designed these sections to meet you exactly where you are—whether you’re looking for a quiet moment alone, time with loved ones, or a small neighborhood social on the front porch!
🧭 Topic Overview
It can be helpful to have a shared context before diving into discussion questions. This section helps set the stage with a brief overview of the episode’s core themes.
🌿 Independent Reflection
This section is all about you. It’s designed for journaling, meditation, or a long walk. By checking in with your own heart first, you build the internal foundation needed to live honestly and connect deeply with the world around you.
What’s inside: You'll find deep-dive questions for your journal, a relevant quote for contemplation. Depending on the topic, we may also include a suggested solo activity or practice to help you process the theme further.
🏠 Family & Partners
This is for the adults you share a life with. In the busyness of daily life, it's easy to stop discovering new things about the people we love. This section is an invitation to stay curious about one another and practice listening with intention.
What’s inside: You'll find relational questions for partners or relatives and a relevant quote to discuss together. Depending on the topic, we may also include a suggested activity designed to be completed in under an hour.
☕ Neighbors & Acquaintances
Perfect for book clubs, community groups, or just a backyard hangout. This section focuses on building bridges with people you might not know intimately yet, fostering respect and shared discovery.
What’s inside: You'll find topic-relevant questions for group discussion and a shared quote to spark different perspectives. Depending on the topic, we may also include a suggested group activity.
🎧 Teenagers (Ages 13–18)
Teens bring a fresh and vital perspective to any conversation. This section is designed as an invitation for the teenagers in your life to share how they see the world changing and where they see themselves within it.
What’s inside: You'll find high-interest questions that relate to teens' daily lives and a quote for reflection. Depending on the topic, a creative activity may be included.
🎈 Children (Ages 5–12)
This section is designed to engage young minds to explore big ideas in a way that resonates with a child's world. It’s never too early to start wondering about the world together!
What’s inside: You'll find "wondering" questions and relatable quotes. Depending on the topic, an age-appropriate suggested activity may be included.
Tips for using a Front Porch Retreats Conversation Guide
Pick and Choose: You don’t have to do the whole guide! Flip to the section that fits your audience and your schedule.
No "Right" Answers: The goal is the conversation, not a finished product. If a question leads to a different story, follow the story!
Create the Space: Think of the guide as a starting point, not a script. Glance at the questions when you need them, then put your device (or paper, if you printed the Conversation Guide) down so you can be fully present to listen and engage deeply.
